What will help my sense of motivation?

When your energy and mental health resources are low, thoughts such as ‘I can’t be bothered’, ‘I don’t feel like it’ or ‘What’s the point?’ can often arise. The apathy is understandable; if you don’t believe that an action is going to yield a level of reward of some form, you are unlikely to get motivated towards doing it. We might be relying on our level of motivation before action . However, this alone is seldom enough and it’s a common mistake to made to wait for motivation to arrive to effect changes in our lives.

Where we feel lost or overwhelmed, it can make it even more difficult to make a decision towards action. However, the consequences of procrastination or inaction can prolong suffering. In any situation which you dislike, you will need to be able to make adjustments to that or change how you feel about it. Sometimes both are required. Decisions to act do not need to be big either. The first step towards action is often the hardest, because the inertia at it’s greatest. Activity breeds activity. Motivation doesn’t not necessarily need to at the start, because this can grow once action has started.

Our values are like a moral compass…. These are the things that we feel are important, that matter to us, our purpose. When you live your life according to your values, they guide the decisions we make and actions. These are strong motivators. What values do you believe are important?
